Twenty years ago today, I was a blushing bride.
The blush, of course, is long gone (I was faking it, anyway). The sense of adventure, however, isn't.
There's nothing quite like spending a long, holiday weekend with 3 adults, 4 boys under the age of 13, no running water, an outhouse with huge, mutant spiders & a muddy swimming hole to "bathe" the kids in. The adults, of course, had the luxury of the 5-gallon vinyl camp shower, hanging from the pole normally used for hanging dead deer.
Oh, we mustn't forget digging out the truck. The truck that was buried up to its tailgate in stinky, schlurky muck. The truck that got stuck in the process of pulling out the tractor ... Pure heaven for a couple of little 10-year-old boys.
Mud wrestling, campfires & stink bombs ... friends, 4-wheelin' & fireworks ... life just doesn't get much better.

Actually, we took a break & started over Way Back When, so it doesn't really feel like 20 years ... sometimes, it feels like 100. teeheehee
"Couldn't get any worse"?? WORSE?! HA! Obviously, I'm too redneck to realize I wasn't having a great time.
What would've been "worse" is if there'd have been cell phone reception (or even phone lines) & cable - then we'd have been tempted to call AAA & the kids would've missed it all because they'd have been in front of the TV.
What would've been even worse than that is if PawPaw hadn't made it & we'd have missed out on his gravy & biscuits & fried taters & overall presence. THAT would've been bad.
It was the stuff memories are made of. I've got a million just like it.
Well heck Rose, adventure and memories are what marriage is all about. (and a few other things, tee hee) I have three different sets of memories. Some of them were out of this world or they should have been. Ha-ha.
Marriage is a fine institution, (that is if you want to be in an institution for the rest of your life). Just kidding, I enjoyed every one of my marriages until the sweetness went out and the men got stale. Then it was time to move on.
But you know, I found out that the grass is seldom ever greener on the other side of the fence. So from now on I will stay on this side of the fence and not climb over. Barbed wire hurts too much!
The lessons I have learned I chalked up as thorns in my rose garden of life!
As to fireworks, I love fireworks and cookouts as well as family reunions. And sometimes they go hand in hard. Ha-ha.
Family reunions are really interesting and a good time to see relatives that you seldom ever see. The favorite statement at a family reunion is “My gosh, I haven’t seen you since you were this high”. Everybody says it, including myself. But that is half of the fun. The other half is the good food that shows up.
So never pass up a family reunion, you will be sorry if you do. I kid you not!

When I was in OR, the kids and I spent a long weekend in the mountains in a house that cost over 2 grand to rent (and no I didn't pay for that), and it was nowhere near as fun as "the camp house". The food wasn't nearly as tasty either!
The lack of cell reception was the best! I could have done without the mutant spider though, especially given its proximaty (sp?) to me considering where I was! Eek!
More fireworks next year though!!!

well, well now we have the do nothing critics commenting on the Wallback lake. Chronic fault finders who want to lock the door after the horse has been stolen. The Big otter school location is not in a swamp. it is high above the flood plain. this is seldom underwater. the chronic gripers are those who had hoped to get some of the easy money and didn't. i don't approve of Linenauger because he won't explain the 2.6 mil. paid to the IRS. And one of his relatives is jail in Haiti[i think] for running drugs. Dr. Boggs brother-in-law. However FRED SAMPSON is one of the few people in Clay co. who actually does something other than gripe. It is true we have a lodge in the co. that will fight anyone not one of their members to keep them from succeeding, unless money goes through their hands. FRED is of this group, i believe. However i respect Fred as an individual.

I personally haven't seen the lake, but I know a little boy who loves to fish there. For those of us who don't dwell by the river, it's not all that easy to find an easily accessible fishing hole, so a lake is a darn good idea. It's also led to several fine Sunday afternoons of male bonding between father & son. That can't be a bad thing.
I don't know Fred Sampson, but what difference does it make? Forgive my ignorance for not clinging to every on-going detail, but what did Mr. Sampson do that anybody else with some gumption couldn't have done?
I understand completely that nobody else had the gumption or it would've been done years ago, but why hack on him for neglecting the restrooms & picnic tables?
At what point should the county commission or the tourism people have stepped up & said, "Hey! This is a great idea, Fred! Let us help you out & partner with you on this!" Why blame him & him alone?
I was over at Ivydale/Big Otter area this evening and drove across the low water bridge leading to the school. After all the rain we have had the low water bridge was almost ready to be covered with water.
What is going to happen when the children are in school and it comes a downpour? I will tell you what will happen. Our children will be stuck in school unable to get home.
What will happen when the bridge gets to crumbling from all the flooding? Our children could end up in the creek. Or floating down the raging creek in high flood waters.
I would advise everyone who has school age children to teach their children to swim and how to handle an emergancy dealing with getting swept away in flood waters.
the low water bridge that you mention has been used for years by the residents of Moore Fork. Because you misstate the facts desn't make what you say so. you and your daughters are probably on welfare and wouldn't have a potta if it wasn't being paid for by your neighbors.
the schools shut down at every possible opportunity anymore. not like in my day when we walked a mile in freezing weather to get to school. now the poor little darlings must have a bus come to the door for them. if not chronic gripers like yourself are complaining. the gov.[your neighbors] doesn't owe you a living. get out and go to work.

Fred had an idea & somebody ran with it. It's a done deal. Obviously, the original plan no longer applies. The "hard core hunters" aren't a year-round thing, anyway.
I don't think the "par for the course" issue is that somebody did a half-a*s job - that's the rule, not the exception, around here. The par for the course issue is that once again, there's a prime opportunity at our door & everybody's too busy yakking to hear it knocking.
There's actually a lot of additional costs involved with installing restrooms. Add to that the fact that the cost would quadrduple if they rely on public water to provide the flushing & handwashing. There's a whole lake that could be plumbed, but then the Health Dept. would have to get involved lest somebody get e-coli from using that lake water to wash their hands in. Then you'd have to involve engineers & a whole slew of "experts." If everybody who used it donated a dollar, how long would it take to raise enough money to git 'r done?
Picnic tables, though, should be a no-brainer. How hard would it be for the county commission to provide the supplies to the high school masonry department? How about that "community service" for the petty criminals not bad enough to actually send to jail? How about citizen volunteers?
Or, we can all sit back in classic Clay County fashion & bellyache about what's wrong & never bother to fix anything. That would be par for the course.
How many of the Board of Education members actually have kids who will attend the new flood-prone school? Do any of them even have elementary-school-aged children? Maybe boats & life jackets were included in the original budget plan ...

I do not have children that will be at the new school. But who knows maybe one day I will have a grandchild who may attend the new school. Do I want my future grandchild to attend a school where it will flood? Do I want him/her to go across a bridge that will become over ran with water if it rains? NO.
Just because the school will be on a bank does not mean the lower area to the school will not flood trapping our children/grandchildren at school. This is another poor decision made by the school officals to waste tax payer dollars. I do not appreciate them wasting my tax dollars and putting children in harms way. Futhermore have you thought of all the mudslides that happen in Clay when it rains? Ever think that down the road the hill where the school is going to be located may slide?
Not to mention all the time the children will be on a bus for hours on end. Some of the kids will spend as long 2hrs on a bus. Surely this is not what Clay County wants for the children.
If the school board was ashamed of the Wes-test results now just wait until the children are not in school as long due to being on a bus for 2 hours. I don't see this making the children any smarter.

STATE guidelines say no elementary student should be on a school bus more than 30 minutes each way, no middle school student should have more than a 45-minute ride, and no high school student should face more than an hour on a bus one-way.
But do you see the school board paying attention to the state guidelines? No. They never have and never will. Plain and simple. They could care less about the students as long as they think they are making themselves look good.
than run for office and take CARE of these problems. you have no right to complain if you do not take the initiative and try to solve it.
If you dont want to take your kid to the new school take him somewhere else.

I lived at Moore Fork for 3 yrs. its got to rain for days and rain hard for the water to get over the bridge.
Here's what I don't understand:
Come election time, we vote for the senator/delegate/governor we think will be the most beneficial to us, right? Their job is to legislate, right?

A. Early childhood levels - thirty minutes
B. Middle childhood/junior high levels - forty-five minutes
C. Adolescent/high school education levels - sixty minutes
This code was developed by the very legislators we voted for, right?
So WTF good does it do us to vote for somebody to create codes & make laws for us & then do nothing but p*ss & moan when those codes & laws are treated like so much worthless verbiage? They're there for a reason.
Granted, some of them are merely "guidelines" but this is the kind of thing we need to think about when we vote. I'm sure some of our elected ones can get by on "guidelines." Some, however, need a manual written in user-friendly icons with small, one-syllable descriptive words to explain what the cute little pictures mean. If you elect people who continuously screw up, expect continuous screw-ups. We create our own monsters.

Does the people in Big Otter belong to the rest of Clay County. They do some mighty strange things. Did you all know that the fire department CHARGES if they come to your house on fire or to get you out of a car wreck. Delbert Murphy told me they charged him $500.00 to help him out of his car last winter over at Valley Fork. So I called the chief he say yes they do charge but no more that $500 each time unless it is chemicals. I called Clay they do not charge neither does Lizemore. I think a VOLUNTEER fire department should be Volunteer. By the way Bothe of the other fire departments told me the state pays every fire department in the state close to $40,000 a year to protect the citizens from insurance premimums. How do you all feel?????

In real estate parlance there is a process they use called a "comp" to arrive at a price for a property. Which is to review recent sold prices by property. Since the bog on the hill sold for $10,000. an acre that will benefit anyone in Clay county wanting to sell since the current price per acre is around $1,000. an acre should bring the aking price up to at least $5,000. an acre.
Apparently a "comp" wasn't used to arrive at a price for the mansion on the hill.
the volunteer fire departments billing has been around for decades. all of the volunteer departments in kanawha county bill. all of their members volunteer but they run such a high volume of calls that the state funding, which is a minimum amount doesnt cover all their costs. the only way they can operate is to have a billing system.
so what most of them do is have an annual fund raising effort and if a family will give 20$$ a year then they get put on a sponsor list at their local department that they gave money for support and they wont get billed for calls to their property for that 1 year. its usually 20$ per residence per year. if a family doesnt contribute to the fund then a call is ran then a bill is sent.
which sometimes can be expensive, but most homeowners insurances will pick up the tab.
usually people get the little mailings every year and think what the H### it wont happen here. so the just throw them away. then when it does happen that department is gonna make some of its money back.
the 40,000 a year is a great thing but when you start looking at the up keep of the equipment. maintenance on trucks and everything else they might have. the fire suits which can cost a thousand or more dollars each depending on the kind they have. fuel expenses and bills for the firestation. then food and drinks for firefighters while they are on house fires will usually come out of the fire house funds. then it costs dollars just to get everyone trained. the 40, 000 might not be enough to fund the fire department for a year.
of course some like Marmet play bingo and they never bill and they always have state of the art equipment. So there are options out there if you dont like the billing then maybe suggest doing fundraisers.
here in clay it might be possible to operate on that amount. but i know first hand from being involved with departments around kanawha county it would be impossible.
I am happy to know that Big Otter fire Dept. charges, that way I will make sure that I don't call them.

A few years back the Big Otter fire department had a Halloween party. for fireman and wife that left very little money. I'm sure they are suppose to keep records. So you see why they charge so they can have there party.

As long as the Starchers have anything to do with Big Otter Fire Dept. there will ba a charge for anything that the fire dept does. All they know is MONEY MONEY MONEY and they don't care how they get it or who it comes from. If all of the volunteer departments in kanawha county bill it must be for medical calls only? My home was in 3ft of water due to the drain systems not being cleaned out. It caused my basement lights to spark and standing water past my knees. The VFD not only helped with the electrical problem they also pumped the water out of my basement ahead of many others since i had 4 children living in my home. I however have been charged $500 bucks when I went into labor and the VFD assisted the EMT's. My mom paid fees in clay when we was still living in her home, I myself have not =/ This is something i need to fix. What would we do with out them?

If im stuck in a burning house or wedged in a car how can i stand on my own two feet and like it? You may not like the VFD or the EMT service but I for one am thankful they are here. And how does JFK giving option for welfare even belong in the same statement of VFD, you dont have to be rich or poor to need the VFD. Why do ppl always bring the welfare into every converstation. Not all of us live off the system and even if half of Clay does you cryin about it isnt gonna do a bit of good because they cant afford to have internet you doof!
Actually it wasn't JFK that turned us into a welfare state, it was FDR. Although history books rarely report it, when the welfare system was bing implemented, there were riots and open hostility toward Mr Roosevelt even here in Clay County
& don't forget that Bill Clinton "reformed" the welfare system.

I like a good patchwork quilt that's made totally of polyester fabric peices.

i am a young vet at the age of 32. i got out of active duty at 23 years old and not only bought 1 house but i had placed a downpayment on 2 houses and several acres. so when i was in my late 20s i owned 2 houses clear and lotsa acres too.
he coulda been fighting someone 19 years ago. if you research our military we have had people in some type of "hot zone" since the korean war. several conflicts and little known excursions have always been going on. american population always hear about the big ones, but usually dont have a clue about what a vet has been through during so called "peace time". i am a persian gulf war vet, but i spent time in the gulf in 1994. not during the war. it was still a combat zone and few americans knew about the action that went on in northern kuwait. every time saddam pushed below the 32nd parallel we went into an action mode. alot like the korean border. did you know that has always been a "hot" area. it is the most heavily guarded border in the world and we have our guys out there doing it. we have had it since the korean war!!
then there was panama, guam, beruit, somalia, and several others worth researching.
if lonstranger said he was military and came out and bought a house in clay. i believe him. i forgot to mention that i paid less than half of a years salary for my place. based on my current active duty pay grade. so real estate is cheap here, unlike other places in the world.

Most people say something & never read anything.
In 1986, my husband & I looked at a 4-bedroom, 3-story house with a wrap-around deck, all new, built-in appliances & ... 5? ... acres of property, yada yada blah blah, right outside of Frederick, MD. All for astronomical price of $60,000. Way out of our price range in those lean early days. That same house today sells for close to $200,000.
Too bad I wasn't as financially savvy then as I am now. Could've sold that house & bought my current one several times over.
Youth is so wasted on the young.
well folks don't guess i was as saving as you all when i first went in the military a private received $71. dollars a month. you don't buy much real estate at those wages.
Thats just about what my brother made a month in the air force starting out in 1968.

i'm still off doing my thing in the middle of iraq. i have been here in country since mid december and been away from home since the beginning of september. doesnt seem that long does it. it has flown by for me and i am planning to make it home in time for thanksgiving but we have no confirmed dates yet. the wife will be able to let people know for sure after i find out.
there's mention of military pay and sometimes i forget how little it used to be. my base pay when i first joined in 93 was about 800 a month. then i got housing and food allowances for being married and living in town. under clinton it didn't raise much. i was stuck supporting the family on just a little bit and was even eligible for food stamps while on active duty.
i have been lucky and gotten promoted quickly up through the ranks and Mr. Bush has helped us guys with our annual raises. now the military gets paid a decent wage and pays more than most jobs in west virginia.
