The county commission likes to keep it's audience small, ya know. I'll be among the disenfranchised whose work schedules don't allow us to attend meetings at 10 a.m.
CRPSD's new member - appointed to replace Melissa Postelwait - is Shayne Sams, wife of soon to be former commissioner, Jimmy Sams.
Once again, the county commission had an opportunity to balance some inequalities & do something good. Once again, they've failed to surprise anybody.
The CRPSD system extends over a 50-mile area. With the exception of the 1 Roane County representative, all the board members live within a 5 mile radius of each other, all within just a few miles of the plant.
That's some nice clustered representation for the Procious area, but surely to goodness there were viable candidates from Wallback? Valley Fork? Amma? Left Hand? Anywhere??
Didn't somebody make a prediction not long ago that the new member would be a Sams? Give the person the Grand Prize.
heaven forbid they get someone with any kind of knowledge/experience. The good ol' boy system is the sole reason why clay county is in such poor, pathetic shape.

attended part of the CCC meeting. seems we have a problem with domesticated animals. our legislators have passed so many laws telling us what we have to do regarding domesticated animals that it isimpossible to comply, because of the expenses.
not a word about the wild animals the state claims. not a word about the state paying for the damage their animals cause. not a word about who is responsible for the hurt animals and rotting carcasses along the highways.
not a word about who will be responsible for the avian flu damages should it break out.
our legislators can pass many laws for which they are not held responsible but in the end we the taxpayers pay the bills and the legislators wind up with the money.

Actually, I just sat beside Shayne at her first water board meeting.
I've known her for about 100 years & she's never been anything but dignified. This trait alone will make her an asset.

I don't fault her as a person at all & I think she's going to be an excellent addition to the board.
I really think, though, that the commission needs to expand the coverage for representation. Not just in Shayne's case, but back when the rest of us were appointed, too. Hopefully, as our terms expire, they'll look beyond their noses for our replacements.
A few weeks back, I read a story in The Times Record saying that Roane County has continuously been trying to get a Roane County resident on the Clay-Roane PSD board, but the board keeps telling them the PSD would be better served with board members from Clay County. Why is that? Why is it not feasible for a Roane County resident to serve? What is there to hide?
The Clay County Commission will cut their nose off to spite their face everytime.
With much of the income from clay roane coming from Roane, it is only fair that they have 2 reps on the board.
However it is like everything else in this county, we live in the darn dark ages.

The clay paper reported Fran Kings daughter is now working for the county. No mention of a job opening so of course no one else applied for the job. Our beloved tax dollars are helping to keep it in the family.
It was my understanding that the Sams family lives in Clendenin....or is it just their business that's there? Either way, they have no business serving on boards of any kind in Clay County if they can't live or do business in the county that they are supposed to care so much about. I like it myself as we almost had a bankrupt water company a couple months back and had to get a 23% increase making it one of the most expensive water systems in the entire state. Now we got so much money left over we can give the PSD members a 8% raise now. Funny how government workers from top to bottom work the same way Give Me, Give Me, Give Me til it bleeds. As far a the millions Robert C Byrd brings into the state, I don't think the $7 million he brought in to build a clock in the middle of nowhere benefits a living soul.

The water system is in no better shape now, the only difference is that it is keep quietier now. Fire all the money grubbing employees and hire new TRAINED ones and you will do much better off. I do not believe in talking behind someones back like a lot of you. So Monday I saw Fran King at the courthouse and asked her about her daughters job. She told me her daughter had been a lifeguard at the pool for 3 summers to earn money for school. I told her no the job with the 911. She said that the state had sent down a deadline of 30 days for all homes in Clay County to be addressed and Christina was hired for minimum wage to help Pat the 911 director do the mapping. She said Chrsitina earned about $550.00 in 7 weeks and then the state stopped all mapping in the state and are in the process of deciding what to do. I told her some people were claiming she violated nepotism laws. She laughed and replied with if I was going to use my position to get Christina a job why is she not working at the courthouse or state road garage where she could make some real money for college. Instead of at the pool or that pissy little job where totally she will maybe make $1500.00 all summer. I taught her to work and she should not be punished because she is my daughter. So there you have it folks I agree with Fran and admire her for teaching her daughter to work and not sucking to get her a high paid job like LINK.

Fran is a successful businesswoman who has shown enough initaitive to take on a leadership position in this sorry-ass county. Thats like putting yourself on a bullseye for criticism. I dont know why anyone would want to put themselves in that position, but thats her business.
Her daughter probably doesnt have to work at all, but she has inherited enough of her mother's initiative to work two jobs, take college classes during the summer, and complete community service hours. She has not committed any crimes, and its too bad there arent a lot more kids like her.

I am a teacher at Clay Middle School and Fran's Daughter did not have one of the summer jobs. She worked at Camp Mustang 4 days a summer. However, the children that did have the great summer jobs were Brian Gillespie, Julie Linknogger, Lacie Pierson, Samantha Simons,and Kelly Tanner. When I asked Christina a couple of years ago why she did not work the summer program her reply was. My Mom will not let me because she she wants to let kids that need the money have those good jobs to go to school or purchase clothes for school. Now to the critics I had a different respect for Fran and the morals she taught her child after that short but sweet conversation.

Who do you think took care of her sick husband for 7 or 8 years, had a sick father that che took care of rather that put him in a nursing home, and had a child in school who participated with my child in sports. I believe you have your story wrong I was on the jury. Sheriff Harold Fields allowed Officer Kevin Delk to take it from the wrecker service. Judge Summerfield made Sheriff Fields return it to the wrecker service and the county paid the tow bill and Mr Delk is still driving it. It was taken from Tim Casto, my cousin in Widen. Fran went to court and told the truth that is why Sheriff Fields ran against her for Commission. Go to the Circuit clerks office and read the court transcript before you point fingers.
Kevin Delk is not riding the 4 wheeler where do you get you info from. I think you need to go to the court house and read the report again. If the court made the sheriff give it back how does officer Delt still have it. How many car did Fran get from her inpound??

Just for the record, I think Fran's a great individual, in both the business and personal aspects. She possesses integrity, which is a rare quality these days. She is not afraid of hard work and using a little elbow grease to get things accomplished. The people of Clay County have seen the fruits of her efforts on more than one occasion. It appears that her daughter has also inherited her work ethics.
Some people only pick out the negative aspects they think they see, dwell on those and push all of the good to the back (or out) of their minds. The water system is in no better shape now, the only difference is that it is keep quietier now. Fire all the money grubbing employees and hire new TRAINED ones and you will do much better off. Jennifer doesn't know her butt from a hole in the ground and scrapes by because others bail her out of situations. I say leave her to her own devices and she will run crying.

Why do some of you people in Clay County run each other down so much? It seems to me if you are going to run your mouth about what goes on, you would have the decency to sign your name instead of hiding under “anonymous”.

I have known Shayne Sams for 30 years or more and I have never known her to do anything that wasn’t on the up and up. Shayne is my friend and I think I know her pretty well. So before you start running her down for having the name of “Sams” and being on the board of the PSD, give her a chance and see what she is capable of doing. You may find out that she is an asset.

I do not believe in talking behind someones back like a lot of you. So Monday I saw Fran King at the courthouse and asked her about her daughters job. She told me her daughter had been a lifeguard at the pool for 3 summers to earn money for school. I told her no the job with the 911. She said that the state had sent down a deadline of 30 days for all homes in Clay County to be addressed and Christina was hired for minimum wage to help Pat the 911 director do the mapping. She said Chrsitina earned about $550.00 in 7 weeks and then the state stopped all mapping in the state and are in the process of deciding what to do. I told her some people were claiming she violated nepotism laws. She laughed and replied with if I was going to use my position to get Christina a job why is she not working at the courthouse or state road garage where she could make some real money for college. Instead of at the pool or that pissy little job where totally she will maybe make $1500.00 all summer. I taught her to work and she should not be punished because she is my daughter. So there you have it folks I agree with Fran and admire her for teaching her daughter to work and not sucking to get her a high paid job like LINK.

Her daughter probably doesnt have to work at all, but she has inherited enough of her mother's initiative to work two jobs, take college classes during the summer, and complete community service hours.
She has not committed any crimes, and its too bad there arent a lot more kids like her.

I am a teacher at Clay Middle School and Fran's Daughter did not have one of the summer jobs. She worked at Camp Mustang 4 days a summer. However, the children that did have the great summer jobs were Brian Gillespie, Julie Linknogger, Lacie Pierson, Samantha Simons,and Kelly Tanner. When I asked Christina a couple of years ago why she did not work the summer program her reply was. My Mom will not let me because she she wants to let kids that need the money have those good jobs to go to school or purchase clothes for school. Now to the critics I had a different respect for Fran and the morals she taught her child after that short but sweet conversation.
Fran hasn't worked for anything a day in her life.
Her husband made what she had now. She was just along for the ride.
I know her daughter, she is just like Fran, lazy. College or no college, she won't make money the hard earned way I am sure.
Fran is a very good person and I bet you wouldn't tell her that to her face!
She works very hard and has helped alot of people in Clay County and would help you if she could if you would ask her.
All you people do on these Blogs is talk about other people. Get some backbone about yourself and confront the situation...

Who do you think took care of her sick husband for 7 or 8 years, had a sick father that che took care of rather that put him in a nursing home, and had a child in school who participated with my child in sports. If you have a problem with Fran go to her and voice your concerns but quit being a troublemaker and talking with out signing your name or identifying yourself. Fran has worked hard for herself and for this county. Go to the courthouse or ask some of our representatives in Charleston. Fran is more of a woman that I am, She helps on them wreckers, puts up her own hay, takes care of your place, and helps others. Fran could have quit when her husband died and sit on her as- and did nothing but I bet you did not know her daughter or her husband did not even qualify for Social Security because he had experimental radiation when he was 16. the sheriff made her give it back. A few things like this she would not have to work.
I believe you have your story wrong I was on the jury. Sheriff Harold Fields allowed Officer Kevin Delk to take it from the wrecker service. Judge Summerfield made Sheriff Fields return it to the wrecker service and the county paid the tow bill and Mr Delk is still driving it. It was taken from Tim Casto, my cousin in Widen. Fran went to court and told the truth that is why Sheriff Fields ran against her for Commission. Go to the Circuit clerks office and read the court transcript before you point fingers.

They learn quickly that laying on your back gets your further than actually having to work.

Rose, I just wanted to stop by and say hello. I skim through the blogs every other day or so, but I've been too busy to participate in the conversations lately. (Looks as though that may be a GOOD thing. LOL) Hope all is well with you.
Just for the record, I think Fran's a great individual, in both the business and personal aspects. She possesses integrity, which is a rare quality these days. She is not afraid of hard work and using a little elbow grease to get things accomplished. The people of Clay County have seen the fruits of her efforts on more than one occasion. It appears that her daughter has also inherited her work ethics.
Some people only pick out the negative aspects they think they see, dwell on those and push all of the good to the back (or out) of their minds. It reminds me of a quote by John Lubbock..."What we see depends mainly on what we look for." Sometimes, people just make up things or twist them around in order to keep the sh*t stirred, too. LOL The blogs wouldn't be the same without all of that, though, I suppose. ;)
