PARENTING 101

It's official.
I'm THE WORST MOM EVER!

I fully realize - and just as fully embrace - that I may very well be the Last Parent On The Planet who flatly refuses to buy rated M for Mature games for my children who, by law, are not old enough to buy them for themselves.

Please. People. If there is ANYBODY out there who hasn't lowered the parenting standards & given in to their underage kids, please, please, please back me up on this. Otherwise, I'm going to have to give in & buy my own children all the other things they're not old enough to buy themselves ... hookers, booze, cigarettes ...

ROSE said...

No, I don't care to hear all the justifications as to why anybody thinks it's okay to buy this crap for your kids. They're *your* kids. Raise them as you see fit. I'm just trying to confirm that I am, indeed, the WORST MOM EVER!!!

Anonymous said...

But purty'r than a speckel steam boat

Anonymous said...

You'll just have to use the old "My mom wouldn't have bought it for me so I ain't buyin' it for you" one. Or "when you're 18 you can do what you want to do, but while you're under my roof...." Pisses em right off, but they'll get over it. Maybe one of these days when you have grandchildren you can sit back and say (laugh) " how ya gonna handle this one?" Then you can remind them about all the crap you did "because it was good for them". It'll be here before you know it.

Anonymous said...

Oops. Forgot to take credit for that.

Anonymous said...

I am sure you won't go down in history as being the first or the last "Worst Mom Ever". Stand your ground and let them do without that crap, it will just make them a better person anyway.

I heard all my life when I gave that old excuse "everybody else gets them" but guess what? Mom and Dad never had money to throw out the window (waste) for everything that came along and I survived along with the other 11 brothers and sisters in my family. Those games change faster then underwear nowadays and are obsolete after a week anyways. Good thing mine are all raised and have their own kids to squawk over that stuff now and guess what? They to are learning that saying "NO" is not the end of the world yet it makes them the "worst parent" ever just like when I grew up.

Anonymous said...

hahaha you go Caymomma!!!!!

ROSE said...

Caymomma, I'm sending you my kids. Wait. I'm coming with them ... LOL

My kids know better than to pull the ol' "everybody else does it ..." on me. My mom was The Queen of the Comebacks & I've gotta million of 'em. LOL I'm raising 2 kids - the rest are at the mercy of their own parents. You know, the ones my kids wish they had instead of the ol' butt-puckery, old-fashioned, "I've got standards" Worst Mom Ever!.

Given the obvious natural progression for the need to overstimulate children, what will entertainment have to be like for my grandchildren? "SHOOT THE GRANDMA! SHOOT THE GRANDMA!! TIE HER UP & TORTURE HER!!" ??

I reckon I'll just have to be the first to go .... LOL

Anonymous said...

The head can withstand no more than the ass can endure.

Anonymous said...

I hear it all the time too. Doesn't much matter to me either. My parents didn't give in to my every whim. To be more exact they didn't give in to my whims. I got what was needed! There were some occasional things that got thrown into the mix. But more times than not, I was told no. PERIOD!

And believe you me, I did NOT stand and whimper and whine and plead my case. That would only ensure that I would lose what privileges I already had. (which meant using the "corded" phone that hung on the kitchen wall, or maybe playing Atari for 15-20 minutes)

I've seen kids back talk, scream, rant and rave at their parents. I can't imagine any parent in their right mind taking it. I know I don't, my parents didn't and my grandparents didn't.

So on more than one occasion, I too have been the worst mom EVER!

Anonymous said...

It's far better to discipline and teach them now while they are young than to let the court system do it in a few years.

Anonymous said...

Amen!

Couldn't have said it better myself.

But for those that are in corrections field, it's a good thing. For as long as there are parents like that in the world there is always job security.

Anonymous said...

I may be old school but I never asked when I was growing up because I knew the answer and there would be no use asking. Until I was 16 years old and started working I guess I done without about everything there was to do without and guess what I didn't miss it a bit. Bet you one thing that I learned about that situation also, I appreciated everything I had growing up and even today I guess I am a horder because I find myself saving everything but worn out clothing and I am talking worn out. I wear them out first in public and then around the house I wear them out again and by then they are ready for the trash. One of these days I think I will buy a bycycle because I never had one growing up. Every kid in the neighbor hood had one but we had enough trouble getting the basics to splurge on nonsense as my dad would say. Buy them what they need and learn them to do without most of what they want. I to have witnessed the tantrams thrown in Wal Mart by kids and I would sit their backside on fire if they were mine and could care less who seen me do it. I like the old saying " I brought them in this world and I can take them out".

Kids now don't even know what it is to get gifts for Christmas or their birthday as every week they have to have something different. The ones that do know you will not have to worry about going to jail to visit them I betcha.

I go to AW's web site about 30-40 times a day looking for new posts and there aren't any. Does that mean I owe 30-40 dollars?

Anonymous said...

Do you mean that you would actually pay for his one-sided opinions?

ROSE said...

Everybody pays for AWs one-sided opinions. Seventy-five cents a pop! Send him a dollar - maybe he'll cut you some slack.

Now. Back to the topic at hand. How many of you even know what the ratings mean on video games? Try this - go to www.esrb.org. That's the Entertainment Software Rating Board. They have a nifty little search widget that lets you enter any game & see what it's rated & why. Here's their definition of the "M" rating:

MATURE
Titles rated M (Mature) have content that may be suitable for persons ages 17 and older. Titles in this category may contain intense violence, blood and gore, sexual content and/or strong language.

Here are their definitions of those terms:

Intense Violence - Graphic and realistic-looking depictions of physical conflict. May involve extreme and/or realistic blood, gore, weapons and depictions of human injury and death

Blood and Gore - Depictions of blood or the mutilation of body parts

Sexual Content - Non-explicit depictions of sexual behavior, possibly including partial nudity

Strong Language - Explicit and/or frequent use of profanity

I stand by my standards.

I continue to embrace my status as THE WORST MOM EVER!!

I know children as young as 5 who are allowed to play these games. I'd be interested in that "justification" now.

Anonymous said...

I would like to set one record straight, I was at the coal hearing when Pete first year on the job. For a new guy he asked a lot of questions some were not very revelant but he asked and Jimmy made the statement afterwards that that was the first year they didn't take the tax dept word and voted against giving the coal company a break and during his turn did it every year. So yes Pete voted against cutting the coal from year one not just the last year. I didn't support this time and I'm sorry for that now.

Anonymous said...

I was at a lot of hearings where Pete asked questions and thats why he is not in the CCC now as he PO'd the bigshots in Clayberry. He surely has voted against the peoples views many times also. Sometimes just because it was his power he wanted to show. The last 200 years has worked in favor of Coal Companies in Wv and will continue to do so as long as they remain in power and control elected officials and have their own people working at the state tax department.

Coal compays should have to pay on every seam of coal and not just one seam. We have to pay on every piece of property we buy and each automobile we have. If I just had to pay on one property or automobile I would have a dozen of each. Just because I could but since I have to pay taxes I limit that to as the least amount I can get by with, and no they have never given me a tax break of $10.00 let alone $6,000,000.00

Ms Rose throw that junk in the trash as that is where it belongs and you won't have to worry about it.

Everybody show up at the CCC meeting in the morning and raise Double HH##$$ with them.

Anonymous said...

Go ahead and give in to em Miss Rose, I am sure that they have played it at others friends houses, I am sure they have heard the Language and all the other content that follows also.

Anonymous said...

I wonder, this 14 mil thats being mentioned, thats not the amount that's paid in taxes, that is a change in the valuation of the property that's being considered for taxation. is it not? our tax dept. has things so mixed up that they have themselves, that is our legislators, confused.

Anonymous said...

LS the amount is the Tax Valuation of the coal property. It amazes me that a 1970 model Cevrolet truck has more tax value then a 100 acres of coal in Clayberry and West Virginia.

Ms Rose beginning March 1. 2009 if you call your neighbor across the road you will have to dial the 304 area code in front of the other seven numbers for the call to go through. So remeber this will start on saturday Feb.28. Don't tell your teenagers and maybe you will get a phone call. Heard this on the news a few minutes ago.

Anonymous said...

If you agree with AW or not you will need to read his update this day. You will also need to read the Ole Calhoun site also to understand about taxing coal companys and the warnings from the state Tax Dept. If you own mineral rights you had better get your tas records from the Assessors office and compare it to last year. The increase in taxes will be hard to come up with for most individuals this year. It will also show just how coal companys steal your property because you can no longer afford the tax. Just read between the lines.

ROSE said...

I think one of my children left that comment at 10:11 ...

Yeah, I'm sure they have seen it all, done it all & heard it all outside the 4 walls of home. That's plenty. Our house is nowhere near big enough to let in all the things they're exposed to once they leave here. My job as the parent is to make sure there's room at home for better things.

This new area code ... who's stupid idea was this?

If you're going to be at the CCC meeting this morning, please raise some Double HH##$$ for me, too, would ya? Make sure you tell them it's from *me*. Say "This is from Rose Cantrell, who has to work on Wednesday mornings." While you're at it, tell them that their meeting schedule doesn't really work for me.

Anonymous said...

While you're at it, tell them that their meeting schedule doesn't really work for me.

Thats why it is that way so that people who have concerns can't voice them because they are at work.
I read the Ole Calhoun county thing as posted on AW's site. The increase in taxes are absolutely scary. A raise from $135 to $2256 is prepostorous. Nearly 2000% increase in actual dollar amounts.

As for the area code thing I just wonder what Genius thought that up. Is it just a brain fart or are they actually braindead?

Anonymous said...

Duhhhh people -- if the phone company has run out of numbers beginning with 304 then they have to come up with some more numbers. Don't you know that many states have had multiple area codes for decades? In fact, West Virginia is currently the only state where you don't have to dial the area code to call your neighbor. It's call progress. With inventions like telephone-based internet access and mobile phones people need more telephone numbers! So, if you prefere, you can give those things up and keep dialing your seven digits. Geez, what IS the issue here?

Anonymous said...

Sometimes you just have to spell things out to people, They don't understand it. Progress must be one of the things that they don't understand.

I am sure Rose, You aren't the worst mom ever, maybe close, Tee Hee

Anonymous said...

It has nothing to do with running out of numbers for cell phones or anything else. How many cell phones use 587 numbers on them. Dialing 7 numbers have worked for the past 50 years just fine and dialing the 304 has not been used to dial any numbers that were local. Just watch your phone bills for the next few months and see how many calls that were local are now going to be toll numbers.

Progess is not always a good thing and sometimes is a pain in the Arse. How many of the elderly will this cause a lot of confusion for? Thats the whole purpose of posting it all here so as not to confuse someone. Not everyone is a smart alec but come here to try to help out by posting important stuff.

Anonymous said...

I seriously doubt (and hope) the elderly aren't coming here for authentic clarification on anything. But if they ARE coming here, then they surely have the skills to dial an additional three numbers to make a phone cell.

Anonymous said...

Right said anon at 3:24!!!

Funny too. :)

ROSE said...

Uh ... Dear Duhhhh ... I've lived in one of those states that's adopted a new area code. Generally, what they do is choose a *region* & declare the new area code for that *region* only. Sure, that means that the people living on the border of that *region* might have to use the area code to call their neighbor, but not every blessed person in the state has to use an area code for every stinkin call they make.

Yes, cell phones have caused issues. Why not give the new area code to all new cell phones?

The stupid part of this plan is that the PCS (or whoever's in charge of such things) has tried to "make things easier" & "please everybody." Which proves, once again, that the harder our government tries, the more miserably they fail.

ROSE said...

Uh ... Dear Rose ... that'd be the PSC, not the PCS. LOL

Bend over for your dose of "PROGRESS"

Content analysis suggests a significant amount of violence, injury, and death in T-rated video
games. Given the large amount of violence involving guns and knives, the relative lack of blood suggests that
many T-rated video games do not realistically portray the consequences of violence. Physicians and parents
should appreciate that T-rated video games may be a source of exposure to violence and some unexpected
content for children and adolescents, and that the majority of T-rated video games provide incentives to the
players to commit simulated acts of violence.

All kinds of nifty tidbits on Rated T along with the Rated M.

Anonymous said...

Anyone know if the Housing meeting tomorrow morning is open to the public?

ROSE said...

Exactly, Anon. Harvard does great studies.

So what happens if you expose those same kids who aren't mentally prepared to deal with the T-rated games - the "G-rated versions" of the M-rated ones? And why the hell (yes, I said hell) would anybody buy those games for their kids?

Anonymous said...

I have to agree with the person about the area code thing. West Virginia seems to be the only place in the country where you don't have to dial the area code. Big, less populated states like Alaska.....must use the area code to call their neighbor. Small, tiny states like Delaware.....must use the area code to call their neighbor. People in the overlay states can live side by side and have completely different area codes and, in those cases, it is not long distance to call next door.

Anonymous said...

Most of those rated M games have parts 1-5+ that come out what seems weekly that all cost 60 bucks each, why any parent would spend that on any video game is beyond me,let alone one thats rated M.

Anonymous said...

Video games are not the problem. Parents that suck so bad at parenting they have to bribe there kids with them are the problem.

Just say NO. Put those fat lazy brats back in front of cartoons where they belong.

Anonymous said...

yes the housing meeting tomorrow is a public meeting

ROSE said...

Anybody else see what AW saw after the CCC meeting yesterday??

Anonymous said...

Nope, not here, but the linkster did try to sugar coat the tax issue by putting it off on the state. Fran stood her ground and never did get a straight answer.
Sad part was the turn out(lack of giving a damn)

ROSE said...

Au contraire. Some of us give more of a d*mn about our jobs. The jobs we have to have to pay all our d*mn taxes.

Anonymous said...

I remember two other County Commissioners who appeared the same way to the public. Proceedings were started that day to remove them from their positions and I am sure that being stupid the Idiot Twins will follow in their footsteps. Its a shame that the damage they will do in the next four and six years of their terms will not be retracted.

Only the voters in this county will be able to put a stop to them. Neither one of them could care less as they are both settled in to jobs that are paying over $100.000.00 each with all the benefits plus what ever they can work out as bonuses with Fola(Consol Amvest) Coal Company. I just wonder what it cost Fola to get a $6 million reduction with the "under the table" benefit plan?

Anonymous said...

So who is the Schoonover listed over on AW website? I've never heard of him. But his face looks a little bit familiar.

Anonymous said...

A brother or Nephew to our crooked senator Randy.

Anonymous said...

I think he is a brother to Mike Schoonover. Still a cousin to Randy though. Nothing like Mike or Carolyn his sister. Must have been dropped on his head when he was a baby or just a plain ole crackhead.

Anonymous said...

Thank goodness he is nothing like Mike. Mike is creepy.

ROSE said...

Wow. I went to school with Todd Schoonover. Well, he was a senior when I was a freshman. That made him like a demi-god to my fellow freshmen & me.

It's always a shock (yes, it has happened before) when you haven't seen somebody for 20-25 years & all of a sudden, there's their mugshot on the news for some horrific crime.

I hope I always remain a fresh-faced teenager in the minds of those who may never see me again.

Anonymous said...

Some of you will recall that on July 8, 1947, a little over 60 years ago, witnesses claim that an unidentified flying object (UFO) with five aliens aboard crashed onto a sheep and cattle ranch just outside Roswell, New Mexico. This is a well known incident that many say has long been covered up by the U.S. Air Force and other federal agencies and organizations.

However, what you may NOT know is that in the month of April 1948, nine months after that historic day, the following people were born:

Albert A. Gore, Jr.
Hillary Rodham
John F. Kerry
William J. Clinton
Howard Dean
Nancy Pelosi
Dianne Feinstein
Charles E. Schumer
Barbara Boxer

See what happens when aliens breed with sheep?

Anonymous said...

Fola laid off at least 30 people Friday morning. That what a tax break will do for you. Way to go Pierson and Link. I hear the people talking and wishing that ol Pete was still there.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, Give em another tax break and see how many more will lose jobs.. What idiots, Maybe link was trying to get his son and a job is why he voted to give them the tax break, But instead they broke it off in the employees, He isn't gonna get a job anyway he can't pass a drug test, He was caught taking pee in a container so he could pass the test such idiots...Way to go CCC...Well 2 of them anyway.

Anonymous said...

Maybe the aliens bred with sheep to get the Idiot Twins to get in the Clay County Commission. Just another lesson that will be taught to the county taxpayers. Bet the business will fill the brunt of this little underhanded trick by King Coal Fola.

Anonymous said...

Linkster was at the school bus garage on Friday afternoon laughing that he knew when he voted that Fola was going to lay off. He thinks we like him the only reason the school system voted for him was to get rid of him. Hope Gillespie is next.

Anonymous said...

Consol Amvest actually laid off 45 hourly employees and 15 salaried personell. They just can't make it without laying off now. More to be laid off in the next few weeks as they have to save some money to pay their taxes at the courthouse.

This will be the last year they can get by without paying tax on their equipment- rolling stock since they won't be in Clay county. Nicholas, Fayette and Kanawha will get the tax dollars now.

Sliminhogger made sure they got away scot free again.

Anonymous said...

The reason they don't post an agenda is because they don't have one. The only thing they know is "the blind lead the blind". Like the CCC or the "Three Blind Mice".

ROSE said...

So what did they talk about?

Are you following the legislation that's going to lift the restrictions on when school starts and ends? Right now, kids can't start prior to August 26 or go past June whatever. The new legislation will lift that restriction to make sure all counties get their 180 in session days. Any county that isn't able to meet the 180 days will be responsible for paying all additional costs for teachers, etc.

If it passes, the new law will apply to all 55 WV counties. Even Clay.

Anonymous said...

I think here in clay they send our kids when they shouldn't right now. Much less have to pay for their absence, clay would NEVER close school down.

Idiots.

Anonymous said...

I for one think our Legislatures, which is 80% WVEA has just about gone the limit. What difference does it make about 180 days of school. It should revert back to the original issue at hand. Send them to school when the Farm work is over with. Thats what it was based on before and it worked for years and years. People done just fine and we had a tenth the criminals locked up in jail and a tenth the crime. So much for Progress and smart legislation from WVEA. The world don't revolve around the school house.....

I for one know that a Migraine is the worst punishment besides a stroke a person has to deal with on a daily basis. I have blacked out from them and I do try not to drive when I have them. Sometimes they hit when least expected and get really bad enough to where you have to go in black out or blockout mode. Throwing up with them are bad as it gets for me.

I don't know him, but I know his mother. She is an excellent, EXCELLENT person. (we go to church with her)

So what happened? Sounds like a bizarre accident. Y'all keep Mr. Ramsey & his family in your prayers.

Jerimiah Ramsey was the name of the one thrown from the dozer on the Fola job today. Said he busted his skull but who knows as noone seems to tell the same thing as to what extent the injury was. Wonder why his seat belt was not used or if it broke or was it faulty?

Clinton Nichols did a fine job in the free press defending his pet commission Linky. I went to the courthouse and asked questions and the truth is the state tax department recommended that the list of individuals on the list be lowered back to last years taxes because an employee in the state tax department had made a mistake and they admitted it to the commission and it is on tape.

I wonder who profited from the mistake?

If you could get Fola to release that information you would be a genius, but rest assured the "Idiot Twins" profited a huge sum from it or it would not have been a done deal.

I wonder, was taxes supposed to increase in 09. but by having a mistake they stayed at the 08 level. That would have profitted the coal co., but, would it have been enough to afford a kickback to our honest politicians. JUST SPECULATING you understand.

Somebody must have bribed somebody good or the warrants from Nicholas county would have been served and P.I. Sock would have been in CRJ already. Why do you think they can't find him to serve the warrant?

That's 2 borderline vocabulary words in the same thread - y'all are pushing your luck. >;]

Quote of the day - "Intensive Care is no place for children." - Barbara Bush, discouraging her 60-year-old son, President George W, from visiting her in the hospital.

Did y'all see the interview with George Sr. on her condition? Sixty-four years together & the prospect of losing her brings a man who once led the Free World to tears.

If you're not touched by a love story like that, get off my blog.

It is so very sad for him to go through with but like all who live it is a promised thing in life. It is honorable to have stayed together that long in a world when 64 days, or weeks is a long time to stay married.

Nowadays things are rushed into without giving any thought of what its all about. Kids want everything their parents have taken 40 years to get and is usually the cause of failure.

I feel for anyone with sickness in the family and our prayers go out to the Bush Family as well.

I have a special place in my heart for the Bush Family I just Love them all. I pray that Mrs. Bush will be ok.

George Bush (son) is the only president I have felt sorry for when taking office. The state of affairs that Clintons left was the biggest mess ever and we will feel the effects of it for years to come. His hiding under Monica Lewinskys skirt and the other women he had affairs with left the world affairs blowing in the wind!!!! I did not have SEX with that woman......

P.S. Get out the bikinis today. 80 degrees is forecasted.... I'll take anything over 60.

Amen. "Define is" ... - Bill Clinton. Pfffft. How quickly, though, so many forget. Nobody remembers that Bill made us the laughing stock of the world. Now, his "legacy" is that he had a balanced budget. I guess that's one way of putting it.

It's 60 already & it's not even 7:30! Get up & get outside!!

Sure had some nice sunshine today as I have a nice glow of Lobster color now. Bet my dr would be so proud of me for enjoying the outdoors today. How nice it was yesterday and today.

Planted my onions and lettuce today as the signs were best for planting today. Bring on the summer I am ready for it now. Got some new strawberries transplanted also. Won't be long before it will be picking time again. Just bring on summertime and garden fresh goodies. Gained ten pounds just thinking bout fresh produce from the garden.

I just heard on the news this morning that Americans are so concerned about skin cancer, they're overusing sun screen & not getting anywhere near enough Vitamin D. When you doctor gripes at you, just tell him you're storing up the D for later.

Incidentally, I'll be happy to help your waistline & take some of that produce off your hands. Tomatoes are my favorite, but I've never been one to turn down anything from anybody else's garden! Well, there was that one time, but ....

I will keep that in mind Ms Rose. After having skin cancer removed I was told to stay covered up or use the sun block but I was never one to buy anything like that, as working outside all day its only good for a couple hours anyway. Hard to keep it on there also.

My garden consist of a raised bed which is 4X8 but with proper care and good fortune I have plenty onions and lettuce for spring tonic. Good cure for winter time blaas. Then comes the strawberries which are very tasty. After they are gone I can plant some halfrunners and tomatoes in there also. Works out very well as there is not a lot of that dreadful thing called work involved. This is Clay county and like everyone else I am allergic to it.

They say that seeds are being bought this year at a rate of ten times what it has been in the past so I guess people are going back to gardening for the depression thats upon the USA. Heard that on the news yesterday so maybe building a elevated garden is taking on to backyard gardeners also. It is a good way to protect it from critters looking for a free meal. By the way I use the potting soil that feeds the plants for 9 months to grow veggys in.

some of the rated M games ARE NOT for children~howvever some are rated M for cartoon violence or mild language, which they hear and see on the news and tv and most children in their homes on a daily...I have a 7 year old who has 3 rated M games that he can play, and it's no worse than him watching the local news or driving through Ivydale....it's about common sense and a little bit of rationalization...
