Random Thoughts ... Revisited

Dr. Susan Linn, (commercialfreechildhood.org) says "sugary cereals are making kids fat" & blames the advertisers. She alleges it's the under-8 group that's "hit the hardest." She needs to quit letting her 8-year-old do the grocery shopping ...

Taco Bell, Wendy's, Dairy Queen, Burger King, McDonald's, Gino's, Tudor's, etc. Not just sugary cereals. Some parents don't grocery shop at all. The fast food places are okay once in a while especially since so many are both parents working families, but for so many, this is just a way to not have to grocery shop and prepare meals. Oh, Pizza Hut, Long John Silvers, Applebees, Shoneys are some of my favorites on the rare occasion that my family eats out.

hey rose; found an interesting report. to long to post here. will try to get it to you if interested. a paragraph from it, "Many common traits made it inevitable that the CIA and Corporate America would become allies. Both share an intense dislike of democracy, and feel they should be liberated from democratic regulations and oversight . Both share a culture of secrecy, either hiding their actions from the American public or lying about them to present the best public image. and both are in a perfect position to help each other." 20 pages titled "The Origins of the Overclass" by Steve Kangas many links including "A Timeline of CIA Atrocities." the lone stranger

...and she forgot the part about how so many schools across the nation have pared down the daily recess times to one or two 20 minute breaks all day long and she forgot to mention that PE, which I recall having from EVERYDAY SINCE FIRST GRADE until I graduated, is non existant in many schools due to lack of funding.
I think she didn't include the fact that across the US, afterschool sports have been cut back or eliminated (particularly for the girls sports) all together.
At least sugary cereals are usually chock full of "vitamins and minerals" such as they are.
My kids both eat sugary cereals (I love Capt'n Crunch with Crunchberries myself!)aAnd neither of my kids are fat. Playing outside helps tremendously!
My two cents! {:-D

You don't have to look far. At Clay Elem kids do not get a daily PE period

What really gripes my goat is that punishment at so many of our schools is staying in from recess. That's no recess AND no phys. ed. class. Yet they serve whole wheat rolls at lunch. Go figger.

Lonestranger, my email address is bareft_gal@yahoo.com. Send it on!

What's really funny about this cereal deal is that I couldn't wait to have kids so I could leave my CrunchBerries & Frosted Flakes out on the counter instead of having to hide them when I had friends over. Now that I do have kids, they prefer Life & oatmeal. WHO ARE THESE KIDS?? LOL

Not to change the subject, but does anybody know who owns the property on either end of the swinging bridge? What sort of right-of-way issues would stand in the way of reopening it for at least foot traffic??

Thanks for the link update! Sorry!

Mornin' Rose. George has continued with the swinging bridge subject on his blog. Hope it helps to keep interest in saving it alive. The Buckshot lawsuit is so embarrasing. I cringe at the thought of it hitting the Charleston or worse yet, the National news media. From the comments I have read, I am not the only one upset about this.

Anyway, going to have my Fruit Loops now. Have a good day.

I don't particularly want to overshare, but periodically, my husband gets a "safety bonus" - it's not a lot, just a little token of appreciation for everybody staying safe & not jacking up worker's comp premiums.

In addition to that, all the employees of the company get quarterly "coal bonuses," provided a certain amount of coal is produced & sold at a certain profit.

In addition to THAT, the coal company he works for has an annual "company picnic" - last summer, that meant tickets to Kings Island for all employees, spouses & children, PLUS tickets to a Cincinnati Reds game.

IN ADDITION TO THAT, they also have a "company holiday party" - complete with band (Confederate Railroad last year), open bar, formal dinner, etc. They also give away lots of door prizes at these get togethers - a few years ago, we won a stereo & that was one of the smaller prices.

The coal companies can afford whatever it takes.

Oops! I wasn't done yet!

Every year, everybody also has to attend "Annual Retraining" - an all-day refresher course on safety, policies, etc.

Besides all that, safety training is part of getting your mining card, which you have to have in order to get a job in the mines in the first place.

I add all this because I simply don't understand how all this has happened. Is it negligence on the part of the mine owners? Is it outdated equipment? Is it a laissez faire attitude on the part of ... somebody? Is it simply laws that are too lax and/or not enforced? Is it the same concept as "the speed limit is 70, but you can get away with 78 before you get pulled over"???
