I just spoke with Commissioner King. According to recent conversations she's had with Senator Randy White, the estimated cost to save the swinging bridge is in the neighborhood of $400,000. How badly do you want this bridge saved? Are you willing to work for it??
The Legislature is in session as we speak. Now's the time to remind them that Clay County helped put some of them there. Fran's offered to participate in a Town Meeting to help in any way she can. What do you think of having a Town Meeting in the near future - say at the courthouse - to discuss the things we've been discussing on the blogs? It'd be a good opportunity to not only discuss the bridge, but also invite our Elected Ones to come out & hear what we have to say. I've offered to help organize this meeting if we can get enough interest. Anyone? Anyone??

Good morning, Rose. Sure was nice to see the response about helping with the STB (Save the Bridge) effort. If I had that kind of money, I would just donate it and then write it off on my taxes. I will keep buying my two lottery tickets each week.
Be prepared everyone for the naysayers. I think we all know there are many needs in this County that could be met with $400,000 other than STB but the way I see it, this is an investment in the future of our County given the current work being done to try to develop tourism. The bridge is very unique and very worth saving in my opinion.

brulz, you're absolutely right, there are a bizzillion things this county could do with $400K that are far more important in the overall quality of life. However, if one little determined group of people could find a way to accomplish one little goal, maybe others would finally follow suit & we could find a way to get those other bizzillion things accomplished, too!

There will always be the naysayers, but likely because they don't have anything worthwhile to do themselves.
I could be wrong but if there were $400,000 to be used to save the bridge it would most likely come from grant money that is specifically earmarked for such things (historical preservation) and not the other things this county so badly needs. It may not be right in the eyes of some but that is how it works. According to Jlink there are 184 possible different sources for such a grant. Seems he's quite capable of writing for and obtaining grant money. I think that the follow through will need some focus when it gets to that point.
Hmm. Who's building the fire department? What's wrong with the old one? What's going to happen to that building? Who makes these decisions? Why is there no public awareness of this kind of stuff? (yes, I paused between each question ... LOL)

How many bids have you had on the bridge? half a million dollars is a lot of money, I'm sure it could be done for a lot less, but then there wouldn't be any left to fund the bogus invoice
