I just changed my mind totally about someone. I saw one of our elected officials in go-mart trying to take Ms. Rock to the motel in Clay. She gave her money for a Pepsi and told her she would like to pay for her a room at the motel so she could rest. Ms Roc told FK that her children were coming from Lousiana and would find her at Go-Mart. Caring for someone else is something rare these days.
Also, go MArt workers were able to come up with $700 worth of meds for the Queen. After Clayberry mentioned the need over there, locals stopped by Go Mart and gave money to cover her meals and needs. Lucy Cruickshanks found housing for her but the lady refused it Friday afternoon.
hey rose; i have nothing personal against mr. linkinogger. i am aware that he is not required by law to publish a board of education financial statement. but it appears to me that mr. linkinogger thinks that he does not have to give the public any information he doesn't want to. this seems to indicate to me that mr. linkinogger feels he is not responsible to the public in any way. personally i feel this is a bad attitude for a public official to have. especially since there are so many financial questions that are going unexplained. 2nd degree FREEMASONS "the public must be deceived" the lone stranger

There's a school board in Houston, TX, that voted 9-0 to base teacher salaries on the success of their students. Kids pass & do well, teachers get an additional $3,000/yr. No more across the board raises.
I wonder if Houston is anything like WV? How long will it take them to dumb down their standards to appease the teachers & make it look like their new plan is working?

Someone was complaining about the way our politicians dress. I saw Fran and a group of men at the courthouse yesterday morning. Then Yesterday evening I talked to Fran at Foodland she was mud to her knees said she had been out with a Aqua Biologist looking at some old coal mines in Clay County to see if we could produce fish in them. I was glad she did not have on high heels. But the first for a long time trying to do something for our county.
Again, I'll say this about Ms. King - she does a lot of things "behind the scenes." The real shocker here is that her "behind the scenes" activities generally aren't illegal, aren't immoral, don't get used as campaign platforms AND will generally help somebody. How the heck did she become a POLITICIAN??
Ah, sirhenry, your insights & observations contradict your substandard Clay County education. You are so very right. If we spent 1/2 the money on cleaning up & refurbishing the schools we already have as we do on "new & improved" facililties, we could keep our classrooms small & managable. If we already have teachers who can't manage a classroom of 15, how on earth will they fare when those class sizes push the limits of state maximums?
sirhenry I'm not sure I can explain what I'm trying to say but here goes. When you buy a teen a car its his responsibility to maintain it. It's for his benefit and personal use. When you are talking school it isn't supposed to be for the benefit and personal use of those administators that are going to be making the big bucks off of it. It's suppose to be for the benefit of the children who are not responsible for keeping the air vents clean and keeping the crud out of the window sills. (although sevral lessons on how to clean up after themselves in the bathrooms and any other rooms in the school would go along way in any school building!!!!) There is no pride in the educational system in Clay County. The administration cannot be proud of the money cover ups that go on, they cannot be proud of schools that fail in providing the best education that can be given. The teachers cannot be proud of failing to teach each child as an individual instead of like a herd of sheep. They cannot be proud to send home notes to parents that are written in worse grammar than their own young students use. How can the students be proud when they hear that these "schools of excellence" they attend are showing such poor ratings and increasing drop out rates? This is a problem that I see has continued for generations and with the importance placed on the state assessments and the way the teachers "teach to the tests" it certainly will never get any better. The children most likely will not be the ones to try to reverse this damaging trend, will it be the parents?
With few exceptions, we have teachers who are there for the money, job security and benefits. They can't manage a class without a "teacher's aide." I know, I'll hear moans and groans about how much teachers are paid, but they know what the pay is before they decide to become teachers. If they want to make more money, then they should do something else. But no, they get their teaching job then whine, moan, protest, lobby -- whatever it takes, to try to get more money. I have no sympathy for those teachers at all.
Ya know, I was educated in the Clay County school system & I consider my education a good one. I not only didn't have to take bonehead courses to get into college, I was able to test out of several 101 courses & move on. The system hasn't always been what it is today.
Once upon a time, we lived in a politically incorrect society where teachers had authority & knew how to wield it. Kids respected that. Parents let teachers do their jobs and didn't undermine that authority.
Somewhere along the way, we became lax & became so politically incorrect that now nobody has any authority.
Teachers are employed for a total of 200 days per year. That's 165 days off. Not bad. That doesn't include the snow days, the "early outs," etc.
Personally, I wouldn't be a teacher. Parents who care are all over you for not teaching their kids, yet the current education guidelines that dictate what you have to teach don't allow a lot of lee-way on how to do it. Parents who don't care aren't willing to help their kids at home, so it doesn't matter what the teacher tries to do.
Teachers blame the parents; parents blame the teachers. As a parent, I'm using the algebra I learned in high school & haven't used since to help my 6th grader with homework. Walk past a lot of classrooms & you'll see teachers playing solitaire on the computer or surfing the internet.
Conversely, some teachers spend every spare moment trying to come up with creative ways to reach their "outside the box" students. They're spending their personal $$ on tools & materials to supplement what their budgets allow.
These are the kinds of teachers I had. Back in the days when bureaucracy & politics weren't rampant in the classrooms & teachers became teachers because they couldn't wrap their minds around being anything else.
Good points, Rose. I remember when it was "if you get a whoopin' at school, then you'll get one when you get home." They taught me how to behave at home so the teacher didn't have to do that when I got to school. If I were raising a child now, especially the hard-headed one I did, they would have to put a revovling door on the jail. No, I did not beat or abuse my child. I brought him up the same way I was brought up. Rules were rules and there was a price to pay if you broke them. Didn't hurt me a bit and it didn't hurt my child a bit to get his fanny spanked when he was being a brat.
For the teachers that really want to teach and make a difference, I do feel sorry for them. Like you, I could not be a teacher. I just get real tired of the ones that are always griping about how little they are paid and most usually it's not the dedicated teachers that do the whining.

I am a bit older now but back in my day we woulda dragged him outside and put a whuppin on him. I guess im outta touch with reality anymore, but i feel if he wants to be that different he should do so on his time away from the work place.

Individualism far outranks professionalism.

Before I get up on my soapbox, I'm not trying to say that anyone here is wrong or right...but I think a slightly different approach/view might help.
I've never been one to judge people based on the way they look, no matter whether they are in a professional setting or not. I understand and agree that there are times and places that a person should be more professional than others. (KMart isn't really one of those, by the way....as long as the person has the attitude needed to work with the public.)
The one thing that bothers me the most about the world today is that people often miss the opportunity to know some wonderful personalities because they judge them based solely on their outward appearance. I've seen some really beautiful people (by the "normal" standards of beauty) who were cold and ruthless, without a personality. There were others who were rough and ragged that were the best people I've ever met. I believe that people need to look past that outer shell and try to see what's on the inside before making a decision.
For instance, I have several tattoos and my ears are pierced 5 times each. It looks like I have a gold mine in my ears. LOL My hair is dyed a dark burgundy color and I often dress in black clothing, complete with chunky black boots. If you saw me out somewhere, you may think that I'm a dark individual with a shady sort of life....a bad@$$ if you will. But I'm not. Just take a look at my blog or my website. You'd never know that I was the same person if you judged me solely on the way I look.
I hate to sound cliche, but what I'm trying to say is "don't judge a book by it's cover". That's the best advice I have ever have gotten or could ever give. You can pick the book with the nicest looking cover off the shelf, but when you open it up there may be nothing but garbled nonsense on the inside. ;) Try to sit back and think about that one for a little while. *steps down off of soapbox and goes back to lurking* LOL

Here's my quick thought on that. The older I get, the less I appreciate the "individualism" thing. Tattooes look fine when you're young & firm, but they're not so pretty when they're 5 times longer & more wrinkled than they started out being.
When I take my child to the ER, I don't want Marilyn Manson as the attending physician. When I see my Legislature in session, I don't want to see a bunch of KISS wanna-be's. When I walk into the school where my children are being educated, I don't want to see punk rock teachers as their role models.
KMart isn't exactly "all that" but the cold harsh reality is that if the guy has any other career aspirations, he might have to rethink that attire. Then again, KMart probably has a good benefits/retirement package.
Oh my...maybe a visit to Charleston (or New York City) would do someone some good. While the cross dresser at the Kmart is surely riling up someone, I can assure you that he is dressing normally according to a smaller but everpresent population. As well as in the rest of the world, this particular population is alive and well in Charleston and has been been for at least 10 years if not longer (that's just as far back as I know about). I guess now that sort of thing is just starting to make its way up the river. I have a picture from ... 1990? ... of this chick at Busch Gardens. No, I didn't know her, but I was so fascinated by her appearance, I had to snap a picture. She had on men's black dress shoes (she either had gynormous feet or they were way too big), black thigh-high stockings (with holes), a black mini-skirt that didn't reach the stockings, a man's gray suit vest over a ripped t-shirt, jet black hair (shaved on 1 side, long on the other), black lipstick, heavy black eyeshadow. Piercings & tattooes visible everywhere. This was in 1990. Almost 16 years ago. The look is OUT. LOL
The guy in KMart doesn't bother me not one bit. In fact, he's kinda pretty (great skin!) & he's very nice. Could probably give me some great beauty tips. He always makes sincere chit-chat & such.

I understand and agree that there are times and places that a person should be more professional than others. (KMart isn't really one of those, by the way....as long as the person has the attitude needed to work with the public.)
The one thing that bothers me the most about the world today is that people often miss the opportunity to know some wonderful personalities because they judge them based solely on their outward appearance. I've seen some really beautiful people (by the "normal" standards of beauty) who were cold and ruthless, without a personality. There were others who were rough and ragged that were the best people I've ever met. I believe that people need to look past that outer shell and try to see what's on the inside before making a decision.
For instance, I have several tattoos and my ears are pierced 5 times each. It looks like I have a gold mine in my ears. LOL My hair is dyed a dark burgundy color and I often dress in black clothing, complete with chunky black boots. If you saw me out somewhere, you may think that I'm a dark individual with a shady sort of life....a bad@$$ if you will. But I'm not. Just take a look at my blog or my website. You'd never know that I was the same person if you judged me solely on the way I look.
I hate to sound cliche, but what I'm trying to say is "don't judge a book by it's cover". That's the best advice I have ever have gotten or could ever give. You can pick the book with the nicest looking cover off the shelf, but when you open it up there may be nothing but garbled nonsense on the inside. ;) Try to sit back and think about that one for a little while. *steps down off of soapbox and goes back to lurking* LOL
I almost forgot....read my latest post over on my blog....the one titled "Excerpt from "The Madman"". I posted it yesterday, but it appears to have been perfect timing. It basically says the exact same things I've just said....only in poetry form. ;)

Here's my quick thought on that. The older I get, the less I appreciate the "individualism" thing. Tattooes look fine when you're young & firm, but they're not so pretty when they're 5 times longer & more wrinkled than they started out being.
When I take my child to the ER, I don't want Marilyn Manson as the attending physician. When I see my Legislature in session, I don't want to see a bunch of KISS wanna-be's. When I walk into the school where my children are being educated, I don't want to see punk rock teachers as their role models.
KMart isn't exactly "all that" but the cold harsh reality is that if the guy has any other career aspirations, he might have to rethink that attire. Then again, KMart probably has a good benefits/retirement package.
Oh my...maybe a visit to Charleston (or New York City) would do someone some good. While the cross dresser at the Kmart is surely riling up someone, I can assure you that he is dressing normally according to a smaller but everpresent population. As well as in the rest of the world, this particular population is alive and well in Charleston and has been been for at least 10 years if not longer (that's just as far back as I know about). I guess now that sort of thing is just starting to make its way up the river. It's an oddity for most of us to see I agree, but it isn't anymore offensive than dressing with the state of mind that camoflauge materials match everything.
I agree with the Marilyn Manson physician statement. I went to a Dr. once that had a suit on. I thought that was odd enough.Where was that white jacket with the happy face pin I had come to know and love? I think we come to expect professionals and service workers to dress a certain way and it takes us by suprise and offends our sensabilities when it doesn't happen.
Rose I'm suprised you don't want your legislatures to look like KISS wanna-bes especially if one were to look like Ace Frehley!!!! >; D I know of one teacher that looks like a 1980's throwback pro-wrestler wanna be. That's not good either. Might be a good teacher though I have no idea.
Out here on "the right coast" as someone called it, you'd be suprised at the look a lot of the respected professionals maintain. Some of the them I've seen look like homeless people, but they are indeed good at what they do and are well sought after by the paying public. Smileys right, you need to get past the curious exteriors and find what out whats inside. I gotta go get some coffee now, that was way too much before coffee. {: |

Rose, thanks for saying I looked "perfectly normal". Maybe using myself as an example was a bad choice because I really don't look like a bad@$$ despite the tatts, earrings and the black clothing. I just couldn't think of another example to use. LOL
I do completely understand your point about doctors and other truly "professional" people (such as lawyers, funeral home directors, etc.). In those instances, I agree that their outward appearance is part of the job that they do. That really wasn't what was bugging me. It was more the "discontent" about outward appearances that made me want to say something. LOL

I have a picture from ... 1990? ... of this chick at Busch Gardens. No, I didn't know her, but I was so fascinated by her appearance, I had to snap a picture. She had on men's black dress shoes (she either had gynormous feet or they were way too big), black thigh-high stockings (with holes), a black mini-skirt that didn't reach the stockings, a man's gray suit vest over a ripped t-shirt, jet black hair (shaved on 1 side, long on the other), black lipstick, heavy black eyeshadow. Piercings & tattooes visible everywhere. This was in 1990. Almost 16 years ago. The look is OUT. LOL
The guy in KMart doesn't bother me not one bit. In fact, he's kinda pretty (great skin!) & he's very nice. Could probably give me some great beauty tips. He always makes sincere chit-chat & such.
I work in Charleston. From what I've seen, this look isn't all that predominant during my normal work hours; it might come out later, though. It is, however, The Look to have if you want to work at Spencers.
It's not that I'm "offended" by the look - I'm not buying his wardrobe, so what business is it of mine? I simply don't have the proper appreciation for it anymore. I don't have the proper appreciation for tequila or strawberry daiquiris, anymore, either...
& if Ace Frehely (or Gene or Cris or Paul) wants to be my Legislator, he'd better keep that makeup ON! YIKES!! LOL

Put a glass in the freezer and get it frosty then fillit full of Black Velvet. Straight. Best drink in the world. To further enhance this thought...I am a woman and I love straight Black Velvet. Drinking some now. Want some?
